Blc.Glenn Maidmentは、1998年にオーストラリアの老舗の蘭園であるAranbeem Orchid社により作出登録されました。親は有名なBlc.Toshie Aoki（黄弁赤リップ）とC.Horace（淡紫赤色）です。この花は、C.Horaceの色は相手方の色を活かし、形は自分の良い花型を子孫に残すという特性が良く現れた交配だと思います。咲き始めは緑黄色ですが、時間を経るに従いクリーム白色へと色が変化していくのも楽しみの一つです。また、セパルとペタルの薄紅色の鉛筆で描いた様なスプラッシュが素晴らしいアクセントになっています。花型が良いことに加え、リップの筒の脇のカーブが優しく素晴らしいことも特徴です。
薄いスプラッシュは、Blc.Toshie Aokiの親であるBlc.Waianae Flareからの遺伝が強いと思われますが、この種のスプラッシュの遺伝には、C.intermedia aquiniiは、全く関与していません。C.intermedia aquiniiの系統のスプラッシュは、栽培環境にあまり左右されずにスプラッシュが発現しますが、C.intermedia aquiniiに由来しないスプラッシュは、栽培環境等により強くでたり弱く出たりする傾向があります。
元々スプラッシュは、リップの形質がペタルに受け継がれてしまった奇形と言われています。これは、私の個人的な見解ですが、蘭の祖先は元々リップ(とはいっても今の様な複雑な形状をしたものでなく柱頭と一体化したようなものだったと想像しています。)が３枚ある花だったと思っています。 進化の過程で、非常にエネルギーを必要とする柱頭、花粉塊の数を少なくし、なおかつ媒介する昆虫の注意を引くために、リップがゴージャスになると共にリップと異なった形状や色のペタルへと変化していったのではないでしょうか。最近原種のシブリングクロス等が頻繁に行なわれるようになり、C.Trianae等でもスプラッシュの花が出現しています。これは、一種の先祖返であるのではないでしょうか。専門家の方を含め皆様のご意見をいただければ幸いです。
Blc.Glenn Maidment was created and registered in 1998 by Aranbeem Orchid, long-established Orchid Company in Ausatralia. Parents are famous Blc.Toshie Aoki(semi-yellow with pencil splash) and C.Horace(light lavender). This flower is one of the showcase of C.Horace genetic characteristic that allow the color of opponent and leave the good shape of C.Horace. In addition, the pencil splash on sepal and petal is very attractive. This thin splash seems to be strongly inherited from Blc.Waianae Flare which is the parent of Blc.Toshie Aoki. Interestingly, inheritance of this kind of splash, C.intermedia v aquinii is not involved at all. Splash of the line of C. intermedia v aquinii develops splash without much being influenced by the cultivation environment, but splashes not derieved from C.intermeia v aquinii tend to be strong or weakly depending on the cultivation environment. The splash is said to be perolia that the characteristic of the lip is misprinted to petal. This is my private guess, the orchid’s ancestor had a flower with three pieces of lip(although it was like a one integrated with the stigma, not complicated shape like today’s lip). In the process of evolution, in order to reduce the number of stigma and column which requires much energy, and to attract attention of insects, the lip becomes gorgeous.
