1997年に台湾の方が登録された品種です。
今回この好みの分かれるド派手な花を取り上げたのには、二つの理由があります。
その一つは、個体名のネーミングです。この株を購入した時には、個体名で‘金絲猴’というラベルがついていました。実際の金絲猴は、Wikipediaでは、顔の周囲は顔の周囲や胸部、四肢は橙色（黄金色？）で、眼上部や鼻の周囲は淡青色で、口吻は白い白薄青色との記載があります。実物の金絲猴の写真とBlc. Taiwan Queen ‘Golden Monkey’の配色は大雑把にいって逆の配色かと思います。しかしながら、何故か花をみていて、金絲猴というネーミングにも納得する思いがします。それは、花の黄色部分がお猿さんの顔を直感的にイメージさせるせいかもしれません。ネーミングにも作出者の素晴らしい感性が表れます。皆様は、どのように思われますか。
もう一つの理由は、少し専門的になりますがスプラッシュ系統の遺伝についてです。スプラッシュ系統のカトレア（ペタル（花弁）に地色と他の色が入る系統）での、C.intermedia v aquiniiの遺伝力です。Blc.Taiwan Queenの親のC.Moscombeは、フレアー花で、C.Sedlescomb を経由してC.intermedia v aquinii のスプラッシュ花の遺伝を強く持っていますが、有名なアートシェイド花のBlc.Honolulu Sunsetの親でもあるBlc.George Angusには、C.intermediaの血は全く入っていません。Blc.Taiwan Queenのスプラッシュは、C.Moscombe（C.Mosnor x C.Sedlescomb）、C.Sedlescombe（C.Annette (1919) x C.Suavior）、C.Suavior（C.intermedia x C.mendeli）、C.intemedia vaquiniiと5代にわたり、受け継がれてきた形質です。スプラッシュ花をセレクトして交配されてきたとはいえ、片親の形質が５代に渡り力強く受け継がれているということは、C.intermedia v aquiniiのものすごいスプラッシュ遺伝力を表しています。
なお、C.Sedlescombは、有名なLc.Memoria Doctor Peng（C.Sedlescombe x Lc.Cynthia (1927)）の親でもありますが、若干花保ちが悪い特性がありました。これは、親のC.Anette(C.chocoensi x C.gigas)のC.chocoensis（C.quadricolor）形質に由来すると思われますが、交配が重ねられかなり改良されてきたと思います。次の世代で、どのような花がでるかわくわくしています。
There are two reasons why we picked up this hybrid.
One of them is the naming of individual name ‘Golden Monkey’. Picture in Wikipedia, Golden Monkey’s face is surrounded by orange color, eyes,nose and mouth are pale blue white. I think that the color scheme of real goden monkey and Blc.Taiwan Queen ‘Golden Monkey ‘ is roughly reversed color scheme. However I feel like I am convinced of the naming of ‘Golden Monkey’ for the yellow part of the flower images the monkey’s face intuitively. How do you think?
Another reason is about the genetics of the Splash strain; genetic power of C.intermedia v aquinii. Blc.Taiwan Queen’s parent C.Mocombe is splash flower and strongly carries the splash gene via C.Sedlescomb and C.Suavior. Another parent, Blc.George Angus has no blood of C.intermedia. Splash strain genetic power of C.intermedia v aquinii is tremendous.
